Research Statement:
My research focuses on improving harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring in Lake Coeur d'Alene by integrating satellite observations with field-based water quality measurements. Using satellite-derived chlorophyll-a data alongside in situ measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, Secchi depth, conductivity, pH, and nutrients, I evaluated how remote sensing can complement traditional monitoring methods. The results showed that satellite observations captured lake-wide spatial patterns that field sampling alone could not, with warmer nearshore regions exhibiting higher chlorophyll-a concentrations and greater potential for HAB development. This integrated approach demonstrates the value of combining remote sensing and field data to better understand water quality dynamics in North Idaho waters.
Research Impact:
This research contributes to more efficient and comprehensive freshwater monitoring by demonstrating how satellite imagery can enhance traditional water quality assessments. Improved detection of chlorophyll-a distribution and identification of high-risk nearshore areas provide a foundation for developing early-warning systems for harmful algal blooms. Future work will expand monitoring across additional seasons and investigate relationships among temperature, chlorophyll-a, and dissolved oxygen to improve predictive capabilities. Ultimately, this work supports more informed lake management decisions, helps protect aquatic ecosystems and public health, and promotes the sustainable management of freshwater resources in North Idaho.
