Research Statement:

I want to use my research to evaluate how co-located small modular reactors affect both power flow and transient stability when supplying large data centers. I am further interested in the effects that seasonal water availability has on hydroelectric generation for the power system. I am an undergraduate student pursuing a career in power systems engineering and am very interested in small modular reactors as a potential source of generation that can help meet future energy demand. During my undergraduate tenure at the University of Idaho, I investigated how voltage and frequency respond during different operating scenarios, such as an SMR trip, data center trip, and a three-phase fault.

Research Impact:

This study addresses the potential problems that data center growth within Idaho can bring to the power system. Utilities take years to plan, permit, and build new infrastructure which is a slow process compared to data center growth. A potential solution to this problem comes from the reliability brought forth by SMRs, specifically, in their ability to provide 1) Voltage support, 2) Frequency support, 3) Fault recovery support.
