Research Statement:
I am interested in applying math modeling and data science to fields in natural resources. My current research analyzes Snake River steelhead data to better understand the drivers behind their declining marine survival. Because the time these fish spend in the ocean is difficult to observe directly, I am using statistical models to help bridge this gap. By combining intrinsic characteristics of the fish, such as fork length and outmigration timing, with fine-scale and broad-scale marine conditions, I am working to determine which factors and periods of the first year of steelhead ocean residence are the most limiting on their survival.
Research Impact:
The recent declines in Snake River steelhead survival rates are important to many in the West, as steelhead hold cultural, recreational, and commercial significance. By helping to identify marine conditions and intrinsic factors that influence survival, we can help to inform conservation and management decisions moving forward.
