Research Statement:

The examination of the antimicrobial effects of cold atmospheric pressure plasma on seeds and foodstuffs.

Research Impact:

Cold atmospheric pressure plasmas (CAP) produce reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that inactivate various biomolecules (proteins, lipids, nucleic acids) to cause cell death. Treatment of tissues with CAP to inactivate human pathogens to prevent disease. This is important to the NASA mission since it will reduce foodborne and other illnesses in astronauts during long-term spaceflight.
