Research Statement:

I want to apply my training as a linguist to explore the use of language to reflect ideology. My military experience trained me as a 'practical' linguist working in intel. I still have the powerful interest in language learning and use in its own right. However, my academic work has introduced me to a variety of sociolinguistic theory that I hope will deepen my connection and understanding to language and language use.

Research Impact:

We understand that effective communication can be a powerful problem-solving tool. Researching how ideology is encoded in language may result in more effective communication. This may in turn result in improved political engagement between political leaders and communities. I hope it is possible to find a way to bring various perspectives together to a common purpose; language use may represent a very effective means towards that goal.
